There are very many avenues which people use for the purpose of expressing their ideas and some of the things which they would want to get off their chests. Some of the methods through which this is achieved may not be entirely good but the main idea is for the message to get home regardless of the channels, which are used for the purpose of achieving this. There was a cartoon, which appeared on About.com, the website. This was in the month of September and the same article came later on to appear again 8in the month of October. The article was more of a hilarious depiction of Marc Zuckerbarg, the Facebook founder. In this article, there is an illustration of Zuckerberg and there is also another undisclosed character that is in a black shirt. The character that is associated with this second character seems to be a rather hilarious one. This is further proved by the illustration put across by the character. He says “Dude…you just got unfriended by 750 million people” to the image of Zuckerberg. At first, it may not be very easy to understand the implication of this statement. This is until one sees the newspaper headline that reads, “FB Changes Widely Unpopular.” It may be of the essence to come out clearly and provide further understanding as to why the newspaper holds such a headline or at the same time the character in the white shirt tells Zuckerberg that he has just been unfriended by 750 million Facebook users.
It is pointed out that there are some changes which have made on the popular online social network site, most or some of which have not been very popular with the users of the site. It is also pointed out clearly that the users of the social site have not at all been impressed by these changes, which have been put forth with regards to the once very popular site. The developers of this cartoon use some very vivid and easily identifiable aspects just to bring to light the fact that even the top management of the company has noted the changes, which are being conducted. The Facebook logo is placed somehow on top of cartoon character. At the same time, there is also the presence of the character, which is supposed to be a representation of Mark Zuckerberg. This is something, which further stresses the point that the happenings, which are being exhibited, have not eluded the knowledge and site of Mark Zuckerberg. He is indeed aware of whatever is going on.
The fact that Zuckerberg is indeed aware of whatever is going on means that it goes without saying that he will be a very troubled man. There are also quite a number of reasons which can be pointed out to for the purpose of bringing to light some of the reasons as to why Zuckerberg may be a worried man. The first reason as to why Zuckerberg may be a worried man is expressed through the character that is standing next to Zuckerberg. It may be of the essence for the average viewer to assume that this is a representation of someone who has invested in the business and is on the verge of seeing his investments go through significant losses thanks to Zuckerberg’s doings or misdoings. It is very evident that someone who has put his investments in any business venture is expecting profits and as such, the news of a loss may not be very good news to such an individual. This same representation may also point out someone who works with Zuckerberg. Well, this is someone who might go through the same happenings as Zuckerberg but the effect may be much different. The one who will feel the most significant effect will have to be Zuckerberg. This is because he is the person who happens to be recognized in the whole entity as opposed to the other person who may be the co-worker.
The greatest piece of humor that comes about in the course of going through the cartoon is the statement which the character makes with the aspect of Zuckerberg being unfriended by close to 750 million people. This does not mean that the statement is to be taken in its literal sense. There is some hidden meaning which comes about with regards to the statement. The first thing which is to be understood when seeking to understand what this statement means is to understand that there were some changes which were made on Facebook. As it were, some or most of the users were not very pleased with these new changes, which were taking place. What the statement means is that the once many users who were associated with Zuckerberg’s Facebook are now leaving the social site. This is especially with regards to some of the features which have been included therein.
Therefore, what are these changes, which Zuckerberg has implemented, and as a result, the users of the popular site are leaving? The first one, which is pointed out in this case, is that the posts, which appear on a person’s homepage, cannot be viewed in the order in which they were posted. This is with regards to the timing. With these new Facebook changes, these posts are not viewed from the newest to the latest. Instead, it happens that they are now viewed in the order to their importance, with the less important ones appearing later on the homepage regardless of just how recent they might have been posted. So what is used to determine the importance of these posts? This importance seems to be established by the number of “likes”, “comments “or “shares” that are associated with that particular post. It is argued that the main reason for implementing these changes is said to be with the intention of bringing to light that information which is considered to be of importance to the user and in the process filter out that information which may not be of importance to the user. The other notable change, which seems to have been implemented, is the alignment of friends. In the new Facebook appearance, these changes are brought to light when looking at the order in which a person’s friends appear on the list. Initially, this arrangement was in the order of the alphabet. However, as per the changes, the order of friends is now in relation to the frequency of communication, which the parties have.
There are a lot of sentiments which can be brought out by the disgruntled Facebook users. This is the main reason why Handelsman uses the cartoon to bring out the sentiments of these Facebook users. There are some issues, which are brought about from the cartoon and the discussions that surround it. The first and the most important thing in this case is that most of the users of the sight are not at all pleased with the new outlook of the site. This is because they are finding it rather hard to make use of the new outlook. The other thing, which is pointed out and rather comes out clearly thanks to the feedback, which is given by the users, is the fact that they may not have been consulted with regards to the changes which are taking place in the site. One of the things which Zuckerberg ought to have done before implementing the changes which he has done on the site is first of all collect the necessary feedback from the users. The feedback which these people would have been given is what ought to have been used in coming up with the new outlook as opposed to just implementing it haphazardly. Through the happenings, which are taking place, it is also easy to point out that the site is slowly losing popularity to potential competitors. The one thing, which keeps users to a particular site, is the user-friendliness of the site. In as much as Facebook may be a contemporary online social media site, this may not be the case for long if the current changes continue being implemented. The cartoon, which has been used to depict the state of affairs, has used satire and visualization, which is rather easy to understand. However, the situation if far more serious than a laughing matter especially for Facebook as a business entity.
